Tech Briefs are rapidly produced assessments of the best available evidence for a topic of highly limited scope. They are less rigorous than systematic reviews. Best evidence is indicated by research designs which are least susceptible to bias according to evidence levels adapted from Bandolier that categorise studies of diagnostic methods according to susceptibility for bias (see Appendix 1). Where methodologically acceptable and applicable, appraised evidence is limited to systematic reviews, meta-analyses, evidence-based clinical practice guidelines, health technology assessments and randomised controlled trials (RCTs). Where not available, poorer quality evidence may be considered. iii EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Background Over the last few years, modern digital infrared thermal imaging (thermography) has become available to patients in New Zealand through privately-financed providers. The National Screening Unit (NSU) in New Zealand is receiving inquiries about the effectiveness of infrared thermography in the early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer. The aim of this review is to provide the NSU with independent information from which to respond to these queries and to assist New Zealand patients and clinicians in making informed choices about the role of infrared thermography in the screening …

Following a patient with breast cysts using thermal imaging: case report

Background: Breast cancer is a common malignancy in which early breast cancer detection by the help of imaging can improve the treatment outcome. Thermography utilizes infrared beams which are fast, non-invasive, and non-contact and the output created images by this technique are flexible and useful to monitor the temperature of the human body. Case presentation: Our patient is a 25-year-old w...

Comparative accuracy of Digital Infra-red Thermal Imaging(DITI) in breast cancer diagnosing

Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death among women. Early diagnosis can increase the survival rate in cancer patients. Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging (DITI) is a portable and non-invasive diagnostic technology that is non-contact, pain-free and radiation free procedure for breast carcinoma diagnosis. However, the link between disease and heat radiation is complex and in many case...

Evaluation of Thermal Imaging in the Diagnosis and Classification of Varicocele

Introduction: A varicocele is the abnormal dilation and tortuosity of venous plexus above the testicles. The pattern of abnormal heat distribution in the scrotum can be detected through thermal imaging, which is a distant, non-contact, and non-invasive method. The aim of the present study is to detect and grade varicocele. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted on 50 patients with high...
